Eye Care: Choosing The Perfect Eye Cream

Let’s talk about eye cream today, the delicate care for the windows to our souls. Most ladies think that using a regular face moisturiser on their eyes is sufficient, and that there is no need for a separate product for those peepers. That is a big no-no and a misconception, so here are some tips on choosing the perfect eye cream and its importance.

What’s The Importance of Eye Cream?

Our eye area is the most delicate and sensitive part of our face, and it requires extreme care and attention to prevent issues like puffiness, dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles.

There are a few oil glands around your eyes to keep the skin naturally hydrated, which is why it is extremely important to find an eye cream that is hydrating as well.

How Do You Choose The Right Eye Cream?

1. Know your skin type

The skin is the body’s largest organ, and given how much time you spend caring for it, it is important to know your skin type to select the right products. You may identify your skin type by looking at this chart:

Dry, Combination & Normal Skin: Select an eye cream/serum that moisturises your skin. Note that balancing your skin with the right amount of moisture will do for normal skin. Ingredients to look out for include hyaluronic acid (also known as Sodium Hyaluronate) and vitamin C & E.

Oily Skin: Select an eye cream/serum that will absorb excess oil. Look out for the term ‘non-comedogenic’ on your eye cream. The term non-comedogenic means a product has been specially tested and proven not to clog pores, keeping your skin clear. Avoiding heavy, pore-clogging creams is vital to preventing tiny white bumps around your eyes—though if you already have them, a professional milia seed removal facial can help clear them up. Salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate) are ingredients to look out for.

2. Tackle your concern

After knowing your skin type, the next step is to identify your areas of concern so you can find the right eye cream to address them. Here are some that we commonly face:
eye cream for Puffy eyes

  • Puffiness: Puffy or swollen eyes can be caused by stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, and other factors. Choose an eye cream with ingredients such as vitamin E, cucumber, and aloe vera, which soothe and calm redness on the skin.
eye cream for Dark Eye Circles
  • Dark Circles: Dark circles are caused by tiredness and late nights. There is even evidence to mention that it is caused by genetics, ageing and dehydration. Choose an eye cream with vitamins C and K, kojic acid and carrot seed oil to help brighten the eye area and reduce eye pigmentation.
eye cream for Finelines and Wrinkles
  • Fine Lines & Wrinkles: Fine lines and wrinkles are caused not only by ageing but also by external factors such as sun damage, squinting, smoking, and vitamin deficiencies. Choose an eye cream with ingredients such as Retinol, Coenzyme Q10, and grape seed extract; they are great for boosting thinning skin and smoothing out fine lines.

3. Choose SPF during the daytime

Eye cream with SPF protection is extremely important, as it protects the eye area from UV damage. Choose an eye cream/serum that provides SPF to prevent premature wrinkles, and its reflective properties help brighten tired eyes.

Tips: Try using a powder foundation with SPF on your eyes; it doubles as a concealer and sun protection! =)
